A new dance series, "Share the Floor," is coming to streaming service Broadway on Demand, just in time for International Dance Day (today, April 29!).
The show will highlight a wide range of established BIPOC choreographers—including Savion Glover, Bill T. Jones, Ariana DeBose, Sergio Trujillo, Francesca Harper and Sasha Hutchings—in addition to bringing attention to underrepresented groups in the dance world.
Each hour-long episode—hosted by Broadway vet Vasthy Mompoint and filmed at Open Jar Studios—begins with an interview with a guest artist, followed by a live dance class led by that artist, and ends with a Q&A.
The goal, series creator Christopher Gattelli said to Playbill, is to inform. “The need to have more diverse representation and equity in all fields, not just in our Broadway community, but globally, is not only demanded but long overdue,” said Gattelli (who won the Tony Award for Best Choreography in 2012 for "Newsies"). "My hope is that 'Share the Floor' is something not just for the current moment, but is a program that will continue educating and providing an outlet for artists to create."
